Graham ~ Greenawalt Families

It took many years researching to uncover my relationship to these families, which came through the marriage between my great grandparents; William H. Graham and Sarah Catherine Greenawalt.

-- The Greenawalt Families came to Colonial Pennsylvania from Germany during the mid 18th century. Their story, and their life events, contributed to the very early development of our Colonial Pennsylvania history.

-- Also, here are the Graham ~ Greenawalt family photos.

I begin with me and the story about my Graham family. My father, Robert, was born to Calvin Stoey Graham, and Ruth Etta Barr, in Harrisburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.

Calvin was born in 1905 to William Graham, and Sadie Greenawalt, in the farming community of Mongul, Lurgan Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania.

-- My great grandfather, William, adopted his Graham name from his mother's 3rd husband, William Irwin Graham.

-- For quite some time I thought my great grandfather was born to this William, and his 1st wife, Mary Oliver.

-- The timeline of events, and the names William Graham, and Mary Graham, turned out to be coincidental. They were two different William and Mary people. But it did have me spinning my wheels during my research.

-- The details on William’s life are in these papers; a must read.

-- My father's, and his sister's, oral history, memory of William.

-- Also, here's William' research paper, and the family directory.

-- There are no records that we could find indicating William's middle name, or intial. The "H" is assumed.

William H. Graham (1873-1948) Family

-- My paternal great grandparents: William Graham and Sadie Greenawalt.

William H. Graham was born September 12th1873 to Samuel B. R. Culbertson and Mary Sophia Hildebrandt in the Shippensburg area of Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.

William was most likely named after Samuel's father, William Holmes Culbertson.

-- At some point during adulthood my great grandfather took the Graham name from his mother's 3rd husband, William Irwin Graham (1833-1908)

-- William's early life from his birth to his young adult life revolves around his mother, Mary Sophia Hildebrandt, and her life events, and marraiges.

-- William's mother, Mary S., was previously married to John Nearon, who died in 1866. Mary and John had a daughter, Carrie.

-- In 1870, before William was born, 25 year old Mary S. Naron, and her 6 year old daughter, Carrie, were living in the post office area of New Kingston, Middlesex Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.

-- Mary was a housekeeper for 31-year-old John and 26-year-old Margaret D. Weary, and their 4-year-old (born 1866) daughter Florence Weary. Also, in the home was 20-year-old farm laborer, Josiah Cassey.

-- On December 19th 1871 Mary S. Nearon of Middlesex married her 2nd husband, Samuel B. R Culbertson of Middlesex, in New Kingston, Middlesex Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania by W. W. Wanbaugh. Witnessed by David H. Wanbbaugh and John A. Linsdorf.

On September 12th 1873 my great grandfather, William Culbertson, was born.

-- By all accounts, sometime during 1874, Samuel B. R Culbertson deserted Mary and William, leaving with another woman, Julia Nonemaker, to Ohio, were their first child was born September 23rd 1875.

Then on July 18th 1875, Mary Sophia Culbertson married William Irwin Graham by Mr. Brickley, Minister of the Gospel, and witnessed by Samuel Larkon and Richard Devor and wife.

By June 24th 1877 Mary and William had a daughter, Mary Florence Graham. My great grandfather's half sister.

By 1880 Mary, her 9-year-old son William Culberson, her children with her 3rd husband, William, and his children from his previous marriage with Mary Oliver, were living in the Shippensburg Township area.

-- On May 19th 1888, Mary S. Graham, Mary Florence, Clara Zora, and Gertrude Viola were baptized at the German Reformed Church in Shippensburg, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.

There is no reliable information on my great grandfather after the 1880 census record.

I think as a young man William had at little education. He struggled to read or write his name, until much later in life, when he did read better and could at least write out his name. This lack of education may have hindered his ability to work beyond a semi-skilled laborer in farming, carpentry, plumbing, and other trade fields.

During 1884 and 1895 William was a twenty something farm laborer living in the Shippensburg area. It was during this time he met 25 year old Dellia Catherine Killinger of Upper Strasburg Franklin County Pennsylvania. During this time Dellia and William lived within two miles of one another.

During October of 1895 twenty five year old Dellia would became pregnant. On February 6th 1896, having made his mark "X", and witnessed by E.M. Shade, a 22 year old William Graham married 26 year old Dellia, who was five months pregnant. They were married at Dellia's parent's Upper Strasburg family home.

-- The Franklin County marraige application is the first record that confirms my thinking about his education.

-- The record also identifies my great grandfather's name as William Graham. He lived in Shippensburg, and his parents names as William and Mary Graham.

-- Dellia Catherine Killinger was born January 16th 1870 to John Wesley Killinger and Susan Ethel Stake. John Wesley Killinger was born May 19th 1843 in Southampton Township Franklin County. His wife Susan Stack was born August 1856.

The newly married couple lived with Dellia’s parents, but four months later, in June 1896, William left Dellia for the Maryland-Pennsylvania state line to work in lumbering.

One month after William left, on July 4th 1896, Dellia’s son, Norman Wesley Graham, was born at the home of his grandparents in Upper Strasburg Franklin County Pennsylvania.

-- Norman married Hilda Wilhelmina Pigorsch on January 10th 1920 in Abilene Kansas.

-- In March 1898, John Killinger sold his farm. He and his family, along with Dellia and their son Norman, went to the city of Baltimore in Maryland.

-- While in Baltimore Dellia’s father worked in the textile industry as a laborer, and Dellia worked as a cotton spooler. The family lived at 136 David Avenue, Third Precinct- Sixteenth Ward Baltimore Maryland.

However, Norman Wesley Graham was not my great grandfather's son.

-- This was a revelation, which was proved through my DNA Report, which is also how I knew about having a Culbertson heritage.

Sometime prior to 1900 William came back to the Shippensburg area, living with Charles and Alice Hoch in Southampton Township, a short distance outside Shippensburg.

While Dellia was still living in Baltimore, William was expecting another child with his future 2ndwife, Sarah Greenawalt.

The details on how William and Sarah met are not clear, but their 1st child, Dora, would be conceived in September 1900. She was born June 14th 1901 at Sarah’s parent’s home on present day Mogul Road, Mogul, Southampton Township.

Sometime during the fall of 1901 Dellia and the Killinger family returned from Baltimore to the Shippensburg area.

Then on October 15th 1901 William and Sarah were married in Shippensburg by the Justice of the Peace, A.F. Weaver.

-- On the marriage application, William indicated he lived in Shippensburg, and Sadie Greenawalt indicated she lived in Mongul, Franklin County, which is Southampton Township, about five miles west of Shippensburg. William listed his age as 27, and a farmer.

-- Sadie Greenawalt indicated she lived in Mongul Franklin County, which is Southampton Township, about five miles west of Shippensburg. Sadie listed her age as 30 years old, and her occupation as domestic.

--  William could not sign the marriage license; but it was written out and it contained an "X" located in the midst of his name with a notation; his mark, witnessed to mark A.F. Weaver.

-- Interestingly, on the application where it asks if the applicant was previously married, it was left blank.

By early winter of 1901 Dellia filed for divorce, charging William with desertion.

-- Everyone involved with William and Dellia Graham’s lives must have known about the divorce, Sarah’s pregnancy and the birth of Dora, and her marriage to William.

--  I even located a news article for when William and Sadie applied for the marriage license, and their wedding announcement.

William never responded to courts request, or county sheriff's office request, during Dellia's divorce proceeding. The divorce hearing was held April 1902, and was finalized and decreed on July 11th 1902.

-- When I read the divorce case and affidavits, It surprised me that Sadie’s name was not mentioned.

-- Dellia would later marry Grover Cleveland Hockenberry on June 15th 1911, and they lived in Hopewell Township Cumberland County Pennsylvania.

-- Dellia died June 1963, while living in Shippensburg. She was laid to rest in the Ridge Church of the Brethren, Middle Spring, Newburg Area of Cumberland County Pennsylvania.

So, for a nine months William was a polygamist. This answers the question; why did William and Sarah wait to marry four months after Dora was born to get married.

This brings new meaning to crossing the county line. We can only imagine the tension and social conflict this whole affair brought to the Greenawalt family, but then again Sarah wasn’t new to having children out of wedlock.

After William and Sarah married they moved into the Sarah's parent's home at Pine Hill, present day Mongul Hill Road, Mongul in Southampton Township Franklin County Pennsylvania.

-- Sarah (Sadie) Catherine Greenawalt was born May 6th 1865 to Henry Greenawalt and Jeanette Brinkley of Southampton Township Franklin County Pennsylvania.

-- The Greenawalt and Brinkley families were early settlers of Cumberland and Franklin Counties.

-- Henry's grandfather was Nicholas Greenawalt who entered the Revolutionary War while living in the Allentown area of Pennsylvania.

Before Sadie met William, she was already raising a child from another relationship. Her son, Earl Britton Hostetter was born May 14th 1889 at Sarah's parent's home on present day Mogul Hill Road outside Mogul in Southampton Township, Franklin County.

-- There is no record of a marriage between Sadie and a Mr. Hostetler. By 1910 Britton was listed as a Greenawalt. Britton is fondly remembered. He was William's step-son, and our grandfather's half brother.

William and Sadie Graham would live their entire life at the Greenawalt family home on present day Mongul Hill Road outside Mogul in Southampton Township Cumberland County Pennsylvania. This is the ancestral home area of both the Greenawalt and Graham families.

We have one photo of my great-grandfather as a young William Graham; taken with a work crew outside of a Shippensburg State College building, circa 1902. He's in the 2nd row, all the way to the right.

-- Here's a close up of William. Man do I resemble him.

-- Here's also a photo of William and Sadie, and this one who continued to live at the Greenawalt family home on Pine Hill, on present day Mongul Hill Road outside Mogul in Southampton Township.

During the 1930s and 1940s they would live with Sadie's younger sister Annie Greenawalt, and her husband Enos Wenger.

Sadie passed away at the age of 81 years old, in her home at 9:00 in the morning of June 13th 1946. She was laid to rest with her children at the in the Lurgan Cemetery Lurgan, Lurgan Township, Franklin County.

William continued to live in the Greenawalt family home, with Sadie's sister, Annie Wenger.

In 1947 William began to become ill, when he moved in with his son Calvin in Franklintown York County Pennsylvania."...Mr. Graham near Shippensburg has been ill at the home of his son, Calvin, Franklintown..."

William would progressively get worse, and in January 1948, he went to live in the Franklin County Home located in Chambersburg,Franklin County.

Six months later, on June 11th 1948, William passed away at 4:15 in the afternoon. He was 74 years, 8 months, and 29 days old.

William's services were held June 15th 1948 at 2:00 P. M. at the M. Garfield Funeral Home in Shippensburg Pennsylvania. Services were conducted by Reverend Leroy Perry.

William was buried on June 15th 1948 in the Lurgan Cemetery Lurgan, next to his wife and children.

William and Sadie Graham had four children, who all died early in childhood, except for our grandfather Calvin.

i. Dora Alice Graham was born on June 14th 1901 at Sarah's parent’s home on present day Mogul Hill Road outside Mogul in Southampton Township, Franklin County. Dora was years and 9 months old when she died March 12th 1906. She was laid to rest in the Lurgan Church Cemetery, Lurga, Franklin County.

Calvin Stoey Graham (1905-1983) Family

-- My paternal grandparents were Calvin Stoey Graham and Ruth Etta Barr.

-- This is Calvin's family research paper, and his family's directory.

Calvin was born November 29th 1905 to William H. Graham, and Sarah Catherine Greenawalt in the farming community of Mongul, Lurgan Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania.

Calvin's middle name, Stoey, came from Oliver P. Stoey who was the local practicing doctor in Lurgan during the time Calvin was born. Dr. Stoey most likely delivered Calvin into the world.

Calvin attended the local Mongul School, completing the 8th grade level of education. At 19 years old he hopped a train his Uncle Thomas Greenawalt was conductor on, and made his way to Harrisburg Pennsylvania. He worked as a mechanic and service manager in the local garages and car dealers in the area.

When Calvin was 21 years old, he married 19 year old Ruth Etta Barr on Jun 29th 1927 in Harrisburg Pennsylvania. Ruth was born May 5th 1908 to Harvey Joseph Barr and Sarah Henrietta Ellis in Harrisburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.

Ruth attended the newly formed Central Pennsylvania Business College on Market Square in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. She would eventually graduate from the school in May 1927, before she married Calvin.

-- An interesting side story. Ruth's great granddaughter, April Brent, my sister's daughter, attended Central Penn where she graduated in 1991.

-- During April's graduation ceremony held at the Capitol Forum in Harrisburg, Ruth was recognized as a former student of the Central Penn.

After Calvin and Ruth married, they lived at 203 Brisban Street in Paxtang Borough, Harrisburg, Dauphin County Pennsylvania. They eventually would purchase the home, only to lose the home during the great economic depression in the 1930s.

In 1933 the family moved to Franklintown, York County, Pennsylvania, where their five children would live and attend school.

Robert Harvey Graham (1928-2004) Family

-- My parents Robert Harvey Graham and Dorothy Irene Klinger.

-- Here's the Robert's familt research paper, and family directory.

Robert (Bob) Harvey Graham was born October 4th 1928 to Calvin Graham and Ruth Barr in Harrisburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.

Bob was five years old when his family moved from Harrisburg to Franklintown Pennsylvanian. At the time Franklintown was becoming less of a local farming community, and more of a modern suburban commuter town. Here Bob would be his mischievous self, and attend the local schools.

In 1945 Bob quite school, completing the 11th grade, and enlisted in the Navy on January 21st 1946. After receiving his training at Camp Perry Virginia, he left May 29th 1846 for his two year duty in Yokasuka Japan.

After his two year hitch was up in 1948, he was discharged, and went to work as a machinist for the Clymer Machine Shop, who manufactured equipment and automotive parts in Mechanicsburg.

At the time my mother was working for the J.D. Ferry Company, who made manufacturing equipment, like potato chip fryers for Hanover chips.

It was through the two companies working relationship, my parents met, and started dating. She got pregnant, and on November 5th 1948, at six o'clock, Bob Graham married Dorothy (Dottie) Irene Klinger at the Evangelical United Brethren parsonage in Mechanicsburg, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.

My mother wore a blue business style dress, known as a street-length dress, with black accessories, and a corsage of yellow roses.

After they married, they would live at 35 West Locust Street in Mechanicsburg Pennsylvania.

-- Dottie was born November 28th 1928 to Edwin Charles Klinger, and Irene Mary Wrightstone in Shiresmanstown, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.

In 1951, Bob began to work with the United States Army Ordinance Supply Section at the New Cumberland General Depot in New Cumberland Pennsylvania.

Dottie also got a job working as a secretary for the Navy supply base in Mechanicsburg Pennsylvania. This enabled Bob and Dottie to move from Mechanicsburg to Bob's home town of Franklintown. This move would eventually lead to a rift in our family.

While at new Cumberland, Bob worked a laborer and truck driver until he left in 1962 to open up a garage with his father Calvin. The garage was known as the Graham's Service Center, which was located in Hampton Township, Cumberland County, at the intersection of Carlisle Pike and St. John's Church Road in Camp Hill Pennsylvania. In 1963, our parents purchased a home in Clearview Estates in Hampton Township, which was also across the Carlisle Pike from the garage.

It was during this time Bob became infatuated with a 17 year old Cumberland Valley school girl, Sherry Ann Bowers. Bob also mismanaged the financial affairs of the garage, and he and his father would loss the garage through bankruptcy court. This caused a server split between our father and grandfather, and our father and mother.

Bob and Dottie separated, and she with the children remained at the home in Clearview Estates, while Bob went to live about a mile from the family in the Stough's Mobile Home Park. Bob also went back to work at the New Cumberland supply depot as a quality inspector. He was helped by Ruth Ort, who he would eventually live with on a farm on Kralltown Road in the Dillsburg and Franklintown area of York County Pennsylvania.

Between Bob's continued change in life style and the bankruptcy, Dottie and the children slowly became estranged from the rest of the Graham family living in the Franklintown area. Bob and Dottie remained separated until 1974 when their son mediated their divorce.

Over time, the family slowly grew closer together, and Bob and Dottie enjoyed many events together at their grandchildren's birthday parties and other holidays.

Dottie was stricken with diabetes which she eventually succumbed to, and she died one day short of her 73rd birthday on November 27th 2001.

Bob died not long after, on December 17th 2004.

Evan after divorce, they were both laid to rest together in the Dillsburg Cemetery, Dillsburg York County Pennsylvania.

Bob and Dottie had four children.
