Sollenberger ~ Diller ~ Bentz Photo Introduction

This web page contains photos from my maternal Sollenberger and Diller ancestors. My mother's maternal great-great grandparents.

-- My mother's mother was Irene Mary Wrightstone, who married Edwin Klinger. Irene's parents were Edwin Wrightstone and Hattie Arnold.

-- Hattie was born to Anna Mary Sollenberger, and Luther Arnold. However, Anna and Luther never married, but Anna did marry Tobias Bentz.

-- Anna's parent's were Jacob M. Sollenberger and Mary Ann Diller.

Hence Sollenberger ~ Diller ~ Bentz Photos, which is to large to fit on one web page. So I created two other web pages, Wrightstone ~ Arnold photos, and a Edwin and Hattie Wrightstone photos web page.

If there was anything written anywhere on the front or back of the photo, it will be recorded in the photo descriptions described below. Photo dates are estimates (c-circa) based on a number of factors; knowing a person and estimating their age in the photos, clothing styles, photographic techniques, etc.

All photos came from my grandmother, Irene Wrightstone-Klinger, Sharon Edmunds-Rankin, Joan Graham-Brent, Bob Graham, Sue Wrightstone-Witters, and Marsha Edmunds-Sharp. All photos are now in the Taylor ~ Graham Library.

The Bentz Family

My mother’s mother, Irene Mary Wrightstone, married Edwin Charles Klinger. Irene’s parents were Edwin Underwood Wrightstone, and Hattie Amelia Arnold.

-- Hattie’s parents were Luther H. Arnold, and Anna Mary Sollenberger. But Luther was 15 years old, and Anna was 19, when my great grandmother Hattie was born. So, there was no marriage between Luther and Anna. However, Anna did marry Tobias Bentz.

Tobias Heiges Bentz was born December 5th 1853 to Michael Bentz, and his 2nd wife, Susan Heiges (Heikes) in Warrington Township, York County. About 1874 Tobias married Alice Barbara Sollenberger, and they five children.

i. Berta A. Bentz was born 1875. and died in 1878.

ii. Albert Earl Bentz, who married Hettie Ann Culbertson.

iii. Gertrude Viola Bentz, who married Harry Jacob Burgard.

iv. Laura V. Bentz, who married Joseph H. Smith.

v. William Michael Bentz was born and died June 2nd 1887.

Alice died during the birth of her son, William. And Tobias hired, my great-great grandmother, Anna Mary Sollenberger, to help him around his home in Warrington Township, York County. While caring for Tobias’s household, Annie got pregnant.

Then on March 18th 1890 they married at the Lutheran Parsonage in Dillsburg. Beside present day Ace Hardware.

Tobias Bentz and Anna Sollenberger had two children.

i. Nettie A. Bentz, who married Roy Henry Firestone.

ii. Margaret L. Bentz, who married Samuel Henry Sweigert.

There are many more photos I have, but have not identifed their relationship to Tobias or his mother, so here the Bentz photo directory.

Also here is the Tobias Bentz research paper, and his father, Michael Bentz, research paper.

The Bentz Family Photos

GB (00A) George Bentz and Nancy Grove.

GB (01A) This is a 2002 photo of the farm.

MB (00B) The photo was in the collection of Margaret Bentz. It’s an old early color photo. Other than being very well preserved, there was no indication of who is in the photo.

-- In the Northern Your County Historical Society, there is a hand painting of the Underwood farm, which is a remarkable resemblance to this photo.

-- Also, here is a similar sketch TG (00) of the Alexander Underwood Farm, which was located in Carroll Township near the Monaghan Township line, between Siddonsburg and Dillsburg in the Northern York County area of Pennsylvania.

-- Our great-grandfather, Edwin Underwood Wrightstone, married Hattie Amelia Arnold. Hattie’s mother was Annie Sollenberger, and when Hattie was 10 years old, Annie married Tobias Bentz. Annie and Tobias are Margaret Bentz’s parents.

Irene and Margaret both share a relationship to Hattie’s mother Anna Sollenberger-Bentz, and her parents Jacob and Mary Sollenberger. This makes Irene a first cousin once removed of Margaret Bentz. Their closeness makes them plain old cousins.

TB (12B) Same photo as TB (12A), but with another girl who is a girlfriend, or relative.

TB (13) This photo was taken about 1920 maybe 1921, with cousins. The mountains in the background appear to be the same contours as the ones in the Sollenberger reunion, which was held off Mountain Road Dillsburg PA. TB (13A) has the names imposed on the photo.

--  Evelyn Burgard is the daughter of Gertie Bentz-Burgard; Evelyn would be 15 years old in 1920.

-- Gertie is Hattie Wrightstone’s step sister. I also suspect that Gertie’s son Clare is also in the photo, who would be 13 years old.

-- Given this lead, then the other children could be Nettie Bentz-Firestone’s daughter Gertrude.

-- Nettie is Hattie’s half sister. Margaret Bentz is Hattie’s other half sister.

-- The four older boys could be related to the Sollenberger familes.

TB (14A) Written on the back of the photo: 2 women and man that Grandpa Bentz brought over to Eberley farm to visit. TB (14B) is a close up of the people. Almost looks like Grandpa Klinger.
