Einsig ~ Schleich Families

Janelle’s father, Ken Taylor, was born in 1921 to Austin James Taylor and Bessie May Einsig.

-- Austin was born was born April 17th 1889 to James Henry Taylor and Emma Jane Hengst. The Taylor ~ Hengst Families are yet another of Janelle's rich German heritage.

So too is Janelle's grandmother, Bessie, who was born to John Henry Einsig and Anna Mary Schleich,. John and Mary maarried January 11th 1881 at the Christ Lutheran Church in York, York County, Pennsylvania.

Anna was born to Jacob Schleich and Louise Kissner on November 11th 1863.

-- Early pronunciations and spellings of names sometimes changed from their country of origin, and the Colonial English pronunciations and spellings. This often occurred with our German ancestors.

Even though Janelle is related to all the Einsig families. This web page is dedicated to just her Einsig branch. But, that doesn't mean the other Einsig families are not part of her lineage. A perfect example, is my sister’s son, Ezekeial (Zek) Graham was born in 1986 to Debbie Graham and Roy George Einsig. Making Zek and my wife 5th cousin. Their common ancestor is David Mathias Einsig and Barbara Rupp, whose sons were David and John. Janelle’s branch is David, and Zek’s branch is John Einsig.

The following Einsig members are sketches of Janelle's specific Einsig ~ Schleich family branch; her direct lineage. They are based on research papers, of each person, their siblings, and their children. The papers contain detailed background material, notations, and citations. If interested, here's the families directory, where you can see everything we have.

-- It is important to remember that not all papers, and background material, are in one location. You really need to venture into each directory of every person. You'll find so much more information.

There are two photos of the Einsig Family. One photo is of Viola Pearl Einsig. She is the daughter of Frank Einsig and Bertha Braine. Frank is the 5th great grandson of Georgium (Johann George) Einzig cited below. Viola would be Janelle's 7th cousin. Their common Einzig ancestors would be Antoni Einzig and Joanna Pfaus. The other photo is of Louise Einsig, who is Janelle's great Aunt, the sister of Janelle's grandmother, Bessie Einsig-Taylor.

Antoni Einzig Family

-- Janelle's 5th great grandparents were Antoni Einzig and Joanna Pfaus.

-- This is the Antoni Einzig research paper, and the family directory.

The Einzig name in German translates as sole, solely, and only. The Einzig family dates back to the mid 1700's, and Janelle's 5th great grandparents,Antoni Einzig and Joanna Pfaus, lived in present day Bad Rotenfels, within the city of Gaggenau, in the district of Rastatt, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. The families would live within this area, about 66 miles east of the Rhine River of Germany, until they immigrated to America.

Antoni and Joanna Enzig had two children.

i. Elias Einsig (b.1767).

ii. Georgium (Johann George) Einzig (b. about 1775)

Georgium (Johann George) Einzig

-- Janelle's 4thEinzig great uncle and his wife were Johann George Einzig and Brigittam Dussler.

-- This is the Georgium (Johann George) Einzig research paper.

Georgium (Johann George) Einzig, was born about 1775 to Antoni Einzig and Joanna Pfaus in the Wachendorf Parish, Horb District, Württemberg, Germany.

John George Einzig married Brigittam (Brigitta) Dustin (Dussler) on April 23rd 1793 in a Catholic ceremony, in the village of Ersingen, Karlsruhe District, Baden Germany.

Brigitta was born to Adami Dussler and Emerentianae Geicherin in the Catholic parish of Wachendorf, Horb District, Württemberg Germany.

Johann George and Brigitta applied for their immigration to America in October 1852 from Württemberg Germany, and the same record identified other Einzig members who immigrated in 1852: Ludwig (Lewis), Cummerane, and Theresia Einzig.

-- I am unable to locate Johann and Brigitta Einzig in America. His name may have been John George, or George.

-- Ludwig (Lewis) was born in the Catholic parish and village of Wachendorf, Horb District, Württemberg, Germany. He most likely is 18 years old, or older, and the husband of Teresia. Theresia C. Einzig was born after 1803 in the Catholic parish of Wachendorf, Horb District, Württemberg.

-- Theresa was 49 years old with children, when she applied for their immigration to America in October 1852 from Württemberg.

Johann and Brigitta Einzig may have died in America after 1852. They may have had the following children; determined by birth, baptism, and immigration records.

i. Cummerane (Kemorana ) C. Einzig was born May 14th 1798 to Johann Georg Einzig and Brigitta Dussler in the Catholic parish and village of Wachendorf, Horb District, Württemberg Germany. Cummerane had a son out of wedlock, named Anton Einsig, who was born May 12th 1829, and christened May 13th 1829 as an Evangelisch in the village of Hochdorf, within the local district of Horb, within the Schwarzwald Kreis, Württemberg, Germany. Cummerane was 51 years old with children, when she applied for her immigration to America in October 1852.

Martin was 26 years old when he married 25 year old Catharina Findling on September 1st 1820, in a Katholisch ceremony in the village of Baisingen, within the Schwarzwald Kreis of Württemberg Germany. Catharine was born on November 16th 1805 to Johann George Findling and Agatha Steiner in Kahldorf. Many of Martin's family members have been researched, and documented. They are some of the more coloraful members of the Einsig clan.

iii.  Christian Einzig was born September 23rd 1806 to Johann Georg Einzig and Brigitha Dussler. He was baptized in September or October 1806 as an Evangelisch in Hochdorf Horb within the Schwarzwald Kreis, Württemberg. Christian died December 12th 1807.

ii. Antonius Einzig was born and christened February 26th 1804. You can read more about Anton's family in his family directory.

iii. David Mathias Einzig was born and christened February 17th 1807.

I believe it was Antonius (Anton) and his brother David who were the first Einzig members to emigrate from Germany to Pennsylvania. I do know that in 1847 David was a witness to the marriage of his 40-year-old Anton Einzig in Baltimore Maryland.

The two brothers were neighbors and lived in Freystown, outside York, Pennsylvania.

David Mathias Einzig

-- Janelle's 3rd great grandparents were David Mathias Einzig and Barbara Rupp.

-- This is the David Mathias Einzig research paper, and his family directory.

David Mathias Einzig was born and christened February 17th 1807 in Bierlingen, Schwarzwald Kreis, Württemberg, Germany. He married Barbara Rupp, who was born March 9th 1804 to Johannes and Barbara Rupp in the village of Volkmar Weiler Germany. She was then christened on March 9th in the village of Fachsenfeld in Württemberg, Germany.

It isn’t known when David or his brother Anton immigrated to America, or if they formally requested permission to emigrate from Germany. They may also have been indentured in order to immigrate to America. However, two records with the name Brabara were located, who emigrate from Germany to America with children. They all have the same profiles as our Einsig family. It is uncertain if the name Barbra Einzig and Barbara Rupp are one in the same person.

The 1st record is dated August 1839, where a Barbra Einzig, and three Einzig Children, applied for immigration to America. The application indicated they were all born in Vollmaringen, Germany.

-- Barbara Einzig: (age 37) Birth Date; 15 May 1802.
-- Johann George Einzig:(age 9); Birth date; 18 Aug 1830.
-- Joseph Einzig: (age 4); Birth Date: 19 Mar 1835.
-- Martin Einzig: (age < 1); Birth Date; 9 Dec 1838.

Then on December 22nd 1843, Barbara Rupp, and five Einzig children emigrated from Ruesten through the ports in Bremen Germany on a ship known as a Barque . The ship’s name was called, Republic, and it arrived at the ports of Baltimore. Their destination was identified as Pennsylvania.

-- Barbara Rupp, 34 years old, born about 1809.
-- David Einsig, 13 years old, born about 1830.
-- Johannes Einsig, 12 years old, born about 1831.
-- Maria (Isabelle) Einsig, 8 years old, born about 1835.
-- Albert Einsig, 2 years old, born about 1841.
-- Mathias (Matthew) Einsig, 11/2 years old, born about April 1842.

On May 17th 1847 David Einzig and Ava Marie Jerplain were witnesses to the marriage between David’s brother, 40-year-old Anton Einzig, and 32-year-old Elenora Schmidt, at the St. Alphonsus Roman Catholic Church in the city of Baltimore, Baltimore County Maryland.

It is unknown when David died, or what happened to Barbra Rupp. It is assumed the other children who immigrated with Barbara Rupp are David’s children. We do know Janelle’s gg grandfather is David Jacob Einzig, and he was born David Mathias Einzig and Barbara Rupp.

The brothers lived in and around York, York County, Pennsylvania. Settling in a small German enclave of Freystown, known for housing gypsy clans, which the Enzig family were known to be affiliated with.

I can tell you, all the papers on the David's and Barbars’s children, and their children, is interesting stuff.

The Einzig families were broom and basket makers, junk and rag dealers, traders, and peddlers. They were considered to be gypsies, travelling about the Pennsylvania and Maryland counties working their trade.

Their stories include George Einzig, whose wife and seven children were living on an island near the Lehigh River in the Allentown area. He was drunk and fell into a canal, and drowned.

Then there's another George Einsig living in Freystown, outside York, coming home drunk, and slits his wife's throat. He was arrrested by his uncle and cousin's Greenawalt husband, taken to jail, where he hung himself.

There are plenty of stories like this, and it's not just the men. Its the women too.

Like 18 year old Ann Einsig, granddaughter of the George who hung himswelf in jail. She was visiting a circus in Columbia, Lancaster County, when she was taken by a band of gypsies, and was forced to marry the gypsy king. All the while her father, was tracking them down, finding them in New York, and forcing a divorce.

Then there are stories of Catherine Einsig, who was involved with with a fornication and bastardy case with Leo Myers. Read the court record.

This family is, withpout a doubt, the most colorful families in the Taylor ~ Graham library

Jacob Schleich Family

-- Janelle's 2nd great grandparents were Jacob Schleich and Lousie Kissner.

-- This is John Henry Einzig's research paper, and his family directory.

Jacob Schleich was born about 1834 in Darmstadt, Germany. Darmstadt is about 70 miles north of the Eizig families. About 1858 Jacob married Louisa Kissner in Germany. Louisa was born about 1835 to Peter and Rosina Kissner in Darmstadt. Her family immigrated to America about 1841, and settled in York County Pennsylvania. After Louisa arrived in Pennsylvania, she returned to Germany with her brother Henry Kissler, where she would marry Jacob.

Rosine Kusner (Kissner), and her 6-year-old daughter Louise, lived in Haiz (Haitz), Germany. They left home, and boarded the ship Gustav on October 23rd1841 in Bremen Germany. Rosina and Louisa arrived at the ports of Baltimore on October 29th 1841.

On May 13th 1859 24-year-old Jacob Schleich, 24-year-old Louisa Schleich, and 17-year-old Heinrich Kissner arrived from Bremen Germany, on the ship Neptune, to the New York ports. Jacob’s origin was identified as Haitz, and Louisa’s and Henry’s origins were identified as Pennsylvania. Their destination was mostly un-readable. The letters appear to read as; T-?-?-s-u-l-a-n-a. I suspect it’s a misspelling, or that the paper’s age effects the forming of the letters. I think it is Pennsylvania.

In 1860, Jacob was 26 years old and Louisa was 25 when they lived in the post office area of York, in Spring Garden Township York County Pennsylvania. They lived in the same home as Peter and Rosina Kissler who were born about born about 1803 in Hesse Germany. Their son Henry was born in 1842 in Germany, and their daughter Mary was born 1844 in Pennsylvania.

Jacob worked as a laborer and a peddler. On July 1st 1863 Jacob was 30 years old, and married, when he signed up for the Civil War Army draft in Spring Garden Township York County Pennsylvania.

Louisa found herself in trouble, when on January 6th 1868 Thomas M. Belt of the Northern Central Railway Company charged Louisa Schleich, Jane Glapmeyer, Margaret Winfield, and Mary Johnson, all of Spring Garden, of stealing stone coal. Louisa Schleich and her brother in-law John Scheider each tendered $200.00 to appear in court to answer the charge. The outcome was not recorded.

On June 1st 1868 Jacob took the oath of allegiance and was naturalized as a citizen of the United States of America, denouncing the King of Prussia, in York County Pennsylvania. Then on April 30th 1869, Jacob and Louisa filed a complaint in York County against Anna Mary Weber and her husband Lorentz Weber of fabricating a false will for Conrad Kissner, who had died April 5th 1869 in York County Pennsylvania. Conrad didn’t have any real estate, but did have money and personal effects worth about $800.00. Jacob and Louisa also claimed that Louisa and her sister Mary Scheider were Conrad Kissner’s only next of kin. Conrad is the uncle of Louisa and Mary.

Jacob and Louisa also demonstrated that the Webers filed the false will in Baltimore Maryland, claiming that Conrad was temporarily living there. The false will was then presented to probate without testimony and administrative letters. Jacob and Louisa also claimed that the Webers were preparing to leave York County with Conrad’s money and personal effects, and that Jacob and Louisa was due $400.00 for providing Conrad with lodging during his lifetime. An agreement was made, and the outcome was not recorded.

In 1870 the Schleich family lived in the post office area of Dallastown, York Township in York County Pennsylvania. Jacob was a peddler. Then on Saturday night, April 19th 1873, Jacob was accused of throwing stones at the door to a home belonging to Margaret Stemple in Spring Garden Township in York County Pennsylvania. The complaint was filed April 21st, and Jacob posted a $200.00 bond to appear at the court session scheduled for Monday, April 22nd 1873. Witnesses for the Commonwealth included: Margret Stemple, Philip Tangler, and Wetzel Selack. The court found that Jacob did destroy the door, and charged him with malicious mischief. An agreement was made, and the outcome was not recorded.

Jacob died, and by 1880 Louisa was a widow living with her daughters, Mary and Elizabeth, in Freystown York County Pennsylvania, just outside the city of York. They were living next door to Andrew Geharing, whose daughter was murdered by George Einsig, the son of Anton Einsig in 1879. Their daughter, Mary Schleich, would marry John Henry Einzig in 1881.

We lost track of Louisa after 1880, she may have remarried to a Smith. Louisa died June 1892, and was laid to rest at the Prospect Hill cemetery in York Pennsylvania.

The following children for Jacob and Louise were extracted from the 1870 and 1880 census record.

i. Emma Schleich was born July 18th 1862.

ii. Mary Anna Schleich (1863-1914). She married John Henry Einsig.

iii. Elizabeth Schleich born March 29th 1866. She married John Kleinman.

iv. Andrew Schleich was born August 1870 in Pennsylvania.
