William Wrightstone (1807-1881) Family

William Lawrence Wrightstone was born February 25th 1807 in Pennsylvania.

He and his brother John Wrightstone lived in early 19th century Fairview Township, York County, Pennsylvania.

-- John Wrightstone and his wife Margaret Hart are my 3rd great grandparents.


It was here in Fairview Township that William would live, farm, and marry Catherine (Katie) Morgan on April 10th 1836. Katie was born April 9th 1816.

In 1836 William was a private under the command of Captain James Snell's 7th Company, attached to the 86th Regiment in the 1st Brigade, 11th Division of the Pennsylvania Militia.

On May 9th 1836 William and other members of the 7th Company disobeyed orders to conduct Battalion training.

A General Court Martial was held in Carlisle on June 10th 1836, and the entire 7th Company was sentenced to pay a $30.00 fine and was restricted from holding any military appointment for five years.

On June 13th 1836, in Hogestown Cumberland County Pennsylvania, a court of appeal was convened on charges of non-attendance to duty of Battalion training. On Friday, November 11th 1836, Joseph Ritner, the Governor of Pennsylvania, pardoned all parties of the 7thh Company.

William died January 25th 1881; age 73 years, 11 months, 0 days at 8 o'clock in the morning. His will and bond was probated on February 11th 1881 for Fairview Township, York County.

His wife Catherine and George W. Atkins renounced themselves as administrator.

William was laid to rest at the Mt. Olivet Cemetery New Cumberland, Fairview Township, York County.

Catherine died June 17th 1896; age 80 years, 3 months, 8 days. She was living at the Messiah Rescue and Benevolent Home, Brandt Cottage, Bailey Street, Dauphin County, Harrisburg Pennsylvania.

Her last bill at the home was paid on September 1st 1896. She was laid to rest with her husband at the Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

William and Catherine Wrightstone had one son, and one adopted daughter.

i. Jacob M. Wrightstone (1837-1894), who married married Mary F. Ross.

Jacob Morgan Wrightstone was born March 17th 1837 to William Wrightstone and Catherine Morgan.

Jacob lived and farmed his entire life in Fairview Township, York County. Jacob married Mary F. Ross on November 24th 1864, who was born December 15th 1843.

Jacob died February 27th 1894, age 56 years, 1 month, 10 days in Fairview Twp at 5:53 in the evening, submitted by Edward E. Wrightstone.

Jacob was laid to rest with his parents at the Mt. Olivet Cemetery New Cumberland, Fairview Township York County.

Jacob's wife issued a Guardian Bond, which was filed March 1st 1897, to her son Edward E. Wrightstone for Marlin F. Wrightstone, Levi M. Wrightstone, Susan Wrightstone, and Elizabeth (Lizzie) Wrightstone.

Marlin and Levi signed March 1st 1897, and the girls; Susan and Elizabeth signed on February 8th 1897.

In 1900 Jacob's wife Mary Jane lived with her son Edward and Martin Thomas, and by 1920 she lived with her son Levi Wrightstone. Mary died January 9th 1923, and was laid to rest with her husband at the Mt. Olivet Cemetery in New Cumberland

Jacob and Mary Wrightstone had twelve children.

vii. John A. Wrightstone was born November 5th 1875, and died from scarlet fever at home on May 3rd 1880: age 4 years, 5 months, 28 days.

viii. Jacob E. Wrightstone was born September 1st 1877, and died from scarlet fever at home on May 4th 1880; age 2years, 8 months, 4 days.

ix. Susan A. Wrightstone (1881-1923)

x. Levi Miller Wrightstone (b. 1883)

xi. Nathaniel C. Wrightstone Nathaniel was born March 10th 1886, and died from scarlet fever at home June 20th 1887; age 1 year, 3 months, 10 days.

xii. Martin Thomas Wrightstone was born April 18th 1888. He died May 14th 1935. He worked as a clerk for the Pennsylvania Railroad in Enola Pennsylvania. Martin lived with his Mother Mary Jane and her brother Levi at 35 Bridge Street New Cumberland Borough.

-- Martin married Mabel Loyer on July 5th 1912 in Hazelton Pennsylvania. She was born February 23rd 1887. Martin's WWI registration dated June 5th 1917 indicated he was single and his mother was his next of kin.

Mary Jane Ferry (1857-1935)

Mary Jane Ferry was born November 1857 in Maryland to William and Catherine Ferry.

-- Mary Jane Ferry was informally adopted as an orphan girl and raised by William Wrightstone and Catherine Morgan, and who has assumed his last name.


In 1860 Mary lived with William and Catherine Wrightstone in Fairview Township York County.

Mary Jane married February 11th 1892 at age 32 to Lewis W. Coble who was 41 years old and living in Fairview Township York County Pennsylvania. After Mary married, she and her husband lived in Newberry Township York County.

On the 1920 Census for Newberry Township, Mary listed her birth, and the births of her parents, in the state of Maryland.

Lewis Coble was born November 1849, and was adopted at age 16 months, circa March 1850.

-- Lewis was a stone mason, and was first married to Annie, who was born circa 1858.

-- In 1880 Lewis was 32 years old, and Annie was 22 living in Conewago Township, York County, Pennsylvania.

-- Together Lewis and Annie had three children:


i. Annie Coble who was born circa 1872.

ii. Jane E. Coble who was born circa 1874.

iii. Cora M. Coble who was born circa 1877.


-- Lewis divorced Annie on September 15th 1890.


Lewis then married Mary Jane Wrightstone February 11th 1892.

Lewis Coble died April 16th 1931 at 12:30 A.M. (30 minutes past midnight). Services were held at the Yocumtown Church of God by Reverend L. A. Hartman, and he was laid to rest at the Paddletown Cemetery, 60 South Main Street, Manchester, York County, Pennsylvania.

-- Lewis identified his daughter from his first wife as the executor of his will: Daughter Emma (Jennie) Drawbaugh, William Parthmore Executor.

--  When Lewis died he had one daughter; Mrs. Charles Drawbaugh of Fairview Township York County

-- A son, Lewis S. Coble, Colonial Park Harrisburg; and seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

--  One brother Peter Coble of Linglestown, a half brother David Drawbaugh of Paxtonia, and a half sister Mrs. Enuna Rudy of new Cumberland.


Mary died June 5th 1935. She was laid to rest in the Shoops Cemetery, plot section A-1, located in Harrisburg Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.

Together Lewis W. and Mary J. Coble had three children.

i. Lee S. Coble was born June 6th 1892.

ii. Peter Coble was a twin born May 15th 1899.

iii. Ann Coble was a twin born May 15th 1899.
