Janelle's mother, Jane Alice Taylor, was born to Paul Daniel Hines, and Irene Belle Mankamyer.

-- Irene was Josiah Christian Mankamyer, and Ida Belle Bittner. Ida's parents were Nathaniel Bittner and Lydia Lepley.


Heinrich Büttner Family

-- Janelle's maternal 6th great grandparents were Heinrich Büttner (Henry Bittner) and Dororthea Brallier.


Heinrich Büttner (Henry Bittner) was born about 1727 in Germany. He arrived in Philadelphia on August 1st 1747 on the ship "Belander Veron". Henry married Dororthea Brallier, who was born about 1744 in Germany.

Henry is listed in the Brother's Valley (Bedford Co, PA) tax lists of 1774, 1776, 1779, 1783 and 1793. He is also enumerated in the 1790 Census in Brother's Valley with nine persons listed in the household.

Henry died about 1794 in Brothers Valley Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania. Dororthea died sometime after 1798.

vi. Roseanna Bittner was also born March 10th 1780.

vii. John Bittner was born about 1774, and died about 1814.


George Bittner Family

George Bittner was born about 1771 in York County Pennsylvania to Heinrich Büttner and Dororthea Brallier. He died about 1844 in Salt Lick Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania. George married Elizabeth (Wacker) Walker in 1792 at the Fritz Church, Berlin, Somerset County, Pennsylvania. Elizabeth was born about 1775 to Jacob Walker and Elizabeth Kuhlman. Elizabeth died about 1847 in Lionier, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.

i. John P. Bittner was born April 18th 1793 in Bedford/Somerset County Pennsylvania.

ii. ;Catharine Bittner was born June 26th 1796.

iii. Dorothea Bittner was born December 23rd 1799.

iv. Henry G. Bittner was born October 31st 1801 in Brothers Valley Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania, He died November 9th 1869, Northampton Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania.

v. Joseph Bittner was born February 6th 1803.

vi. Benjamin Bittner was born January 28th 1805, and died November 26th 1876.

vii. Godfry Bittner was born July 28th 1811.

viii. Lydia Bittner was born April 25th 1814.

ix. Levi Bittner was born July 15th 1818.


John P. Bittner (b. 1793)

John P. Bittner was born April 18th 1793 to George Bittner and Elizabeth (Wacker) Walker in a section of Bedford County, which later became Somerset County, Pennsylvania. John died during the 1870s, and was laid to rest in Fink Congregation Cemetery Southampton Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania.

John married Catherine Baer in 1815 in Somerset County. Catherine was born about 1797, and died November 13th 1861 in Southampton Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania. She was laid to rest next to her husband in the Fink Congregation Cemetery.

ii. Elizabeth Bittner was born July 29th 1818 in Somerset County Pennsylvania.

iii. Jacob Bittner was born August 9th 1820.

iv. Peter J. Bittner was born August 18th 1822 in Somerset County. He died March 25th 1887. Peter lived in Brothers Valley and Summit Township, Somerset County. He married Elizabeth.

>v. Philip Bittner was born about 1824, and died about 1850 in Summit Township, Somerset County. Philip married Diana.

vi. Moses Bittner was born March 24th 1825 in Somerset County Pennsylvania. He died June 8th 1895 in Larimer Township, Somerset County. Moses married Christina Ernst. Christina was born about 1832 to Jacob Ernst/Earnst.

vii. Lydia Bittner was born June 5th 1842 in Somerset County. He died September 5th 1862 in Southampton Township, Somerset County.

viii. Conrad Bittner was born February 11th 1838 in Somerset County. He died after 1910 in Northampton Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania. Conrad married 1st to Matilda, and 2nd to Ellen. He had a son, Nathaniel, born about 1860.


Jacob Bittner Family

Jacob Bittner was born August 9th 1820 to John P. Bittner and Catherine Baer. He married Lydia (Liddie) Cook about 1840 in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. They were both laid to rest in the White Oak Cemetery, Larimer Township Somerset County, Pennsylvania.  [3]

i. Nathaniel Bittner was born August 7th 1842. He married Lydia Lepley.

ii. Lydia Bittner was born in 1844 in Somerset County. She married Nathaniel Geiger. Lydia died in 1920 in Somerset County, and was laid to rest in the White Oak Cemetery, Larimer Township, Somerset County.

iii. Francis Bittner was born February 13th 1845 in Somerset County. He died May 5th 1867; 22 years, 2 months, and 22 days.

iv. Edward Charles Bittner was born February 12th 1855 in Somerset County. He married Matilda who was born June 15th 1857. Edward died January 28th 1914, and Matilda on October 4th 1946. They were both laid to rest in the White Oak Cemetery, Wittenberg, Somerset County, Pennsylvania.


Nathaniel Bittner (1842-1927)

-- Janelle's maternal 2nd great grandparents were Nathaniel Bittner and Lydia Lepley.


Nathaniel Bittner was born August 7th 1842 to Jacob Bittner and Lydia (Liddie) Cook, and was christened at the Grace-White Oak Lutheran and Reformed, White Oak Church Somerset, Pennsylvania. Nathaniel married Lydia Lepley September 30th 1866.

Nathaniel was a Civil War Veteran from the Allegheny Township of Somerset County Pennsylvania. He enlisted as a private in the Union forces on March 6th 1865 for the state of Maryland, Company D of the 2nd Potomac Home Brigade (PHB), Maryland Infantry Regiment. Nathaniel mustered out as a Corporal in Company D, 2nd PHB Infantry Regiment Maryland on May 29th 1865.

Edward Bittner lived with his bother Nathaniel in 1870, and they lived beside Nathaniel and Lydia until 1900.

Nathaniel was visiting his son Clifford on July 4th 1927 in Pennsville, when he became ill and grew steadily weaker. Nathaniel died about 3 o'clock Monday afternoon on July 18th 1927 at his son's home in Pennsville, Fayette County, Pennsylvania. He had always enjoyed good health, and the last illness was only the second time a doctor had attended him. In addition to C. C. Bittner, he is survived by another son, Grant, at home at Meyersdale, and three daughters, Susan and Emma, also at home, and Mrs. Nora Mankameyer of near Sand Patch. The funeral service will be at 10 o'clock Thursday morning at White Oak Church at Sand Patch.

Nathaniel was laid to rest with his wife Lydia in the White Oak Cemetery, Larimer Township Somerset County Pennsylvania.

Nathaniel Bittner and Lydia Lepley children.

i. Albert Grant Bittner was born in 1865. He was known as Grant, and he never married. Grant lived in Pleasant Union, about seven miles outside Meyersdale Somerset County Pennsylvania. Grant was 74 years old when he died April 10th 1941 at his brother, Clifford's, home in Sand Patch. Grant was laid to rest in the White Oak Cemetery, Larimer Township Somerset County.

ii. Ida Belle Bittner was born October 9th 1868 in Connellsville Fayette County Pennsylvania.

Ida married Joseph Mankamyer on February 11th 1892 in Cumberland, Allegany County, Maryland. Ida used her middle name, Belle, on her marriage application, and she was 22 years old on July 1891 when she and Josiah were issued their license to marry. On the record Ida was listed as a maid, and Josiah, age 26, as a carpenter. According to the record, on February 11th 1892 Ida and Josiah were married by Richard Norris, Pastor of the Cumberland Street M. E. Church of Cumberland, Allegany County Maryland.

On November 9th 1898, after 3 weeks of being ill with Typhoid Fever, Ida died in the Larimer Township family home. Ida was laid to rest on November 11th 1898 at the Mt Carmel Cemetery; known as White Oak Evangelical Cemetery Larimer Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania.

iii. Emma U. Bittner was born about 1870. She never married. At 68 years old, after a few days of illness with Pneumonia, Emma died Tuesday January 3rd 1939 at her home in Pleasant Union, about seven miles outside Meyersdale Somerset County Pennsylvania. She was laid to rest in the White Oak Cemetery, Larimer Township in Somerset County Pennsylvania.

iv. Eleanor (Nora) Bittner was born about 1873. She became the 2nd wife of Lewis Mankamyer, Joseph's older brother.

v. Susan (Lizzie) M. Bittner was born about 1875, and died January 28th 1959. She was laid to rest in the White Oak Cemetery, Larimer Township Somerset County.

vi. Clifford C. Bittner was born August 1879. He married Laura Mae Petenbrink who was born in 1879 to Peter Petenbrink and Flora Kennell in Pleasant Union, about seven miles beyond Meyersdale, in Somerset County Pennsylvania. Her brother is Norman Petenbrink of Meyersdale, Mrs. Calvin Bittner and Mrs. John Geiger both of Meyersdale, Mrs. Emery Mankamyer of Portage, and Mrs. Vera Murray of Meyersdale.

Clifford was a motorman for the West Penn Railroad, running chiefly on the main line for a number of years and later was employed in the lighting office of the West Penn Power company. Clifford sold his property on South Ninth Street, West Side, and built and operated a garage at Pennsville.

The family continued to reside there until after the death of Mr. Bittner's father when Clifford moved to the Bittner home place in Pleasant Union, about seven miles outside Meyersdale Somerset County Pennsylvania. There, Mr. Bittner had a small farm and a gasoline station.

Clifford died Tuesday afternoon on April 1st 1947 in Deal Somerset County Pennsylvania. He was laid to rest in the White Oak Reformed Church Cemetery. Laura was 84 years old when she died October 15th 1963. She was laid to rest with her husband at the White Oak Reformed Church Cemetery, Larimer Township, in Somerset County Pennsylvania

Clifford and Laura had three sons and one daughter.
